A 3-step tutorial for getting your Bitcoin back

Retrieving Bitcoin Sent to your Ordinals (Taproot) Wallet

Last week was the INKonBTC mint. The mint I absolutely didn't want to miss. Just before the mint started, I checked my wallet and apparently forgot to put enough funds in the wallet. No problem, I had some in another wallet.

So, I sent 0.1 BTC from my Xverse wallet to my Magic Eden wallet. Should be no problem, you'd think...

After the transaction was confirmed, I discovered I still couldn't mint. I didn't understand it at all.. Checked my wallet and indeed saw 0.1 BTC there.

After some more research, I checked the mempool and there it was, 0.1 BTC sent to my Taproot wallet (Ordinals wallet, starting with Bc1p).

In this post, you'll read the steps I took to get it back.

Understand the situation

For clarity, this post is specifically for users of the Magic Eden wallet. This can vary by wallet. This guide introduces Unisat as the solution, facilitating movement between different Bitcoin wallets associated with the seed.

Step 1: Export seed phrase from Magic Eden Wallet

Navigate to the profile tab in the Magic Eden Wallet.

Click on the 'Security' button.
Within security settings, select 'Back Up'.

Enter your password to reveal the Recovery Phrase.
Note down the 12-word phrase, essential for importing into Unisat Wallet.

Step 2: Install Unisat wallet

Download and install Unisat Wallet from here. Upon starting, choose 'I already have a wallet.'

🚨It's important that you follow this step correctly. You need to import your Magic Eden wallet.🚨

After this you have to make a new password for Unisat.
When prompted for the wallet type, select 'Other wallet' and input your Magic Eden Wallet's 12-word phrase.

Unisat will display all wallet addresses associated with the seed, along with their respective Bitcoin amounts.

Review and confirm Unisat's security warning. If you have any questions about the status of your Ordinals during transfers, reach out directly to Unisat🚨.

Step 3: Accessing Taproot (Ordinals) Wallet in Unisat

In Unisat, click on the settings tab.

Select 'Address Type.'

Choose the Taproot wallet.

Step 4: Sending Bitcoin back to payment wallet

This is the last step and also the most important step. With this, we're going to make sure your funds return to your wallet.

Go back to your Magic Eden wallet and copy the Bitcoin address (starting with bc1q).

In Unisat, from your Taproot (Ordinals) address, send the Bitcoin back to your Magic Eden payment wallet address.
Make sure you have enough funds in your wallet to cover the fees.
